Position Summary:

This position is responsible for the care of patients through assisting the Cardio Vascular Surgeons with outpatient clinic and associated patient task arising from those visits.  The position works with CV team partners within the clinic and at the hospital and is under the direction/supervision of Clinic Manager or physician.

Work Schedule:

The standard clinic schedule is 8:00am to 5:00pm, M-F.  Weekends and holidays the clinic is closed.  May, on rare occasion be contacted by the doctor after hours to assist with patient issues.

Primary Duties:

  • Actively participates directly with patient care and ensures a safe and comforting environment.
  • Responds to patient needs in a timely manner.
  • Transports patients as needed.
  • Welcomes patients and patient is educated regarding their procedure.
  • Answer patient questions regarding procedures and after care.
  • Reports abnormal conditions to the RN or physician in a timely manner.
  • Identifies the organization of the human body, including its systems, structure and functions.
  • Demonstrates general principles of cleanliness (asepsis).
  • Applies the principle of basic nutrition to patient care.
  • Provides basic emergency care.
  • Coordinates the booking and scheduling of patients for procedures/appointments
  • Serves as liaison with physician/facility, patient and families regarding patient care.
  • Performs other duties as directed by supervisor, based on demonstrated competency.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality.
  • Maintains universal precautions.

Department-Specific Responsibilities:

CV Surgery Clinic

  • Assists physician or physician assistant with intra-office procedures, dressing changes, and patient care.
  • Coordinates referrals, follow-up appointments, procedures, testing, and all aspects of patient care based on ASMBS standards, clinic protocols, and commercial insurance requirements.
  • Performs case review directly with physicians, physician assistant, and other team members to ensure that patients meet program and payer guidelines.
  • Submits all required documentation to the precert department for insurance preauthorization approval.  Coordinates with multi-disciplinary team and delivers additional supporting documentation as requested.
  • Gathers records from outside sources for review or inclusion in the patient’s chart.
  • Schedules diagnostic testing, procedures, follow up appointments, and surgeries.
  • Assists physician or physician assistant with intra-office procedures, dressing changes, and patient care.
  • Provides patient education.  Collaborates with the physician, physician assistant, and other nurses in developing, implementing, and evaluation of the teaching plan. Explains procedures and answers questions regarding patient care and scheduled procedures at appropriate grade level to patient and family.
  • Manages medication refill requests.
  • Phone calls
    • Returns phone calls for patient questions in a timely manner.
    • Confirms appointments for procedures, surgeries, and diagnostic testing.
    • Calls patients post-operatively.
  • Assists with clerical duties as needed.


  • Education: Graduate of an accredited Registered Nurse program required.
  • Licensure/ Certification: Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse or licensure from a state within the Nursing Compact required. Current BLS; ACLS required within 90 days of hire.
