Bariatric Surgery vs. GLP-1 Medications

Thousands of people are turning to GLP-1 medications like Ozempic® and Mounjaro® for weight loss. Hear from our own Dr. Samuel Bledsoe, bariatric surgeon, on why weight loss surgery is often the better choice to achieve significant, lasting results for many patients.

Bariatric surgery is the gold standard for long-term weight loss and improved health. The impressive benefits of bariatric surgery help patients in so many ways: decreasing risks, extending life expectancy, reducing or eliminating some medications, preventing heart disease and other medical issues, and even resolving type 2 diabetes. For the 34% of Arkansas adults affected by obesity, bariatric surgery truly has the power to transform, and save, lives.

GLP-1 Medications

Medications such as Ozempic® and Mounjaro®,can be used successfully as part of a patient’s weight loss program. However, they are rarely a substitute for bariatric surgery, and are not a direct alternative. It’s important to note that approximately 75% of people stop taking these medications after one year due to cost, side effects or ineffectiveness. For our patients, we approach GLP-1 medications as complementary rather than competitive. Speak to your bariatric provider about these medications to see if or how they might work for you.

As always, it’s important to make informed choices about your health! We created a side-by-side comparison of bariatric surgery and GLP-1 medications for easy reference. Our specialized team is happy to discuss options and help you find the right solution for your weight loss goals.
