
Chef Mark Elliotte is at it again in the StrongHearts kitchen, providing another great recommendation, this time a healthy baked beans recipe. Paired with his heart healthy barbecue sauce, it’s a perfect combination for any Independence Day celebration, family gathering or backyard bash!
Heart Healthy Baked Beans Ingredients
(Serves 4)
- 16 ounces cooked great northern beans
- 1/4 cup diced onion
- 1/4 cup diced green bell pepper
- 1- 28 ounce can no salt added tomato sauce
- 2 teaspoons garlic, minced
- 1 cup water or vegetable stock
- 1 teaspoon low sodium soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon low sodium mustard
- 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
- 2 tablespoons Splenda
- 1 tablespoon cumin
- 1/2 tablespoon no salt added chili powder
Instructions
- In a large stock pot, sprayed with cooking spray, sauté onions, bell pepper, and garlic until soft, about 5 minutes.
- Add the rest of the ingredients and bring to a boil. Lower beans to a simmer and cover. Cook for about 1 hour. Stir occasionally and add stock if necessary.
